Sharon Callahan’s illustrious 30-year career in pharma advertising has positioned her as one of the industry’s most influential and innovative leaders. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, inclusivity, and mentorship, Sharon has significantly shaped healthcare communications, leaving an indelible mark on the organizations, brands, and people she has touched. Known for her progressive vision and advocacy for diversity, equity, and inclusion, she has played pivotal roles in building transformational brands, launching innovative campaigns, and fostering a culture of belonging across her various leadership positions. Growing up in Vernon, Connecticut, in a family deeply rooted in healthcare, Sharon’s early exposure to the field was instrumental in shaping her career. While she initially aspired to explore different paths, earning a degree in English Literature from Wheaton College, her journey into advertising began with an internship at Young & Rubicam. There, she gained valuable experience in consumer advertising, contributing to iconic campaigns like Dr Pepper’s “I’m a Pepper.” Although her time at Y&R was brief, it set the stage for her next opportunity at Surgical Care Publications (SCP). At SCP, Sharon thrived in an entrepreneurial environment, taking on diverse roles and leading innovative initiatives over nearly 15 years. Her tenure saw the company’s evolution into a powerhouse in medical publishing, giving birth to Medscape, which remains a vital platform today. In 1999, Sharon embraced the startup world by joining Medsite.com, where she created new products and services that transformed the online medical education space. This experience led to the founding of her own company, Summit Group, in 2001, alongside Fay Simmons. Their innovative Hyper CD product revolutionized online physician education and was later acquired by Grey Healthcare Group, where Sharon served as Chief Digital Strategist and President. These entrepreneurial ventures solidified Sharon’s reputation as a bold and forward-thinking leader. In 2009, Sharon joined Omnicom’s Diversified Agency Services, marking the beginning of her transformative impact on the organization. Over the years, she held various leadership roles, including CEO of Lyons Lavey Nichel Swift (LLNS) and later TBWA\WorldHealth, a global health network she co-founded and led. Under her leadership, TBWA\WorldHealth became a trailblazer in the industry, launching groundbreaking campaigns like Keytruda’s first direct-to-consumer campaign featuring real cancer patients. The agency’s success was recognized with multiple awards, including Med Ad News’ Agency of the Year. Sharon’s influence extended beyond her professional achievements. As Chief Client Officer of Omnicom Health Group, she fostered enduring partnerships with Fortune 500 companies like Merck and Bayer, contributing to the organization’s sustained growth. Her commitment to mentoring and advocating for underrepresented groups was equally impactful. She was a founding member of Omnicom’s Open Pride and Omniwomen initiatives, creating platforms for LGBTQ+ and women leaders within the company. Her authentic leadership style and dedication to inclusivity earned her numerous accolades, including HBA Woman of the Year and Med Ad News’ Industry Person of the Year. Sharon’s contributions to the healthcare advertising industry were not limited to her corporate roles. She served as president of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA) twice and played a crucial role in reshaping the Coalition for Healthcare Communications. Her leadership was instrumental in the Coalition’s acquisition by the 4A’s, enhancing its capabilities and sustainability. Additionally, she served on boards of organizations such as the LGBTQ Victory Fund and Women Against Alzheimer’s, reflecting her commitment to social impact and community service. Today, Sharon continues to inspire the next generation of leaders as a mentor, executive coach, and guest lecturer. Having completed an Executive Coaching Certification from Columbia University, she dedicates her time to helping high-achieving individuals reach new heights in their careers. As Deputy Chair of GLAAD, she remains a fierce advocate for DEI initiatives, while also investing in women- and minority-led ventures. Residing in Provincetown, Massachusetts, with her wife and four children, Sharon exemplifies a life dedicated to leadership, advocacy, and making a difference.
